Why choose a member of the British Acupuncture Council?

The British Acpuncture Council (BAcC) is a member of the Accredited Register scheme run by the government and backed by the Professional Standards Authority. With a 3,000 plus membership, it is the UK's largest professional/regulatory body for traditional acupuncturists.

British Acupuncture Council is committed to ensuring all patients receive the highest standard of professional care during their acupuncture treatment. Members must adhere to a Code of Professional Conduct governing ethical and professional behaviour. And, a Code of Safe Practice which sets benchmark standards for best practice in acupuncture. Members are accountable to the BAcC for their professional behaviour and the codes are rigorously enforced. If members break the BAcC's rules they can be fined, admonished or have conditions placed on their practice. In more serious cases, members may be removed or suspended from the BAcC register.

This means you know your acupuncturist is safe and competent.

All members of the BAcC can offer you the following assurances:

  • BSc or BA degree level training or its equivalent in traditional acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and western biomedical sciences including anatomy, physiology and pathology (3,600 hours of study)

  • compliance with current UK health and safety legislation

  • full medical malpractice and public/products liability insurance cover

  • expert practice skills maintained by following a mandatory individual programme of continuing professional development (CPD)

  • regular updates from the BAcC regarding practitioners' professional obligations to the public

  • compliance with BAcC Code of Safe Practice and Code of Professional Conduct

  • patient access to the BAcC complaints and disciplinary procedures

  • English language skills at least equivalent to those required of doctors and nurses working in the UK

Acupuncturists registered with the BAcC carry the letters MBAcC after their name.

Acupuncture when used alongside IVF doubles the chances of pregnancy  - these results are from a study by Homerton University Hospital in London. 160 couples were divided into two groups. Pregnancy rates in the half receiving acupuncture were 46.2% against 21.7% in the half which did not. Stuart Lavery, consultant gynaecologist at Hammersmith Hospital said “There is a patient demand in the field of acupuncture  . . . and this study is interesting in that it shows a statistically significant difference."
